What is a residential proxy?

A residential proxy is an intermediary server that routes your traffic through an IP address assigned by an Internet Service Provider (ISP) to a real consumer device — a home router, laptop or smartphone. Because the destination website sees a perfectly ordinary residential IP, residential proxies are far harder to detect and block than IPs originating from cloud data centers.

The largest residential networks today (Bright Data, Oxylabs, Decodo, SOAX) operate pools of 100M+ IPs sourced through opt-in SDKs and ISP partnerships, with city-, ASN- and carrier-level targeting available in most countries.

How residential proxies work

When you send a request through a residential proxy provider, your traffic is routed through a peer device whose IP address has been assigned by an ISP. The target website's anti-bot stack sees the connection as coming from that consumer device — not from your origin or a cloud data center.
